SHS KRAM Announcements 1/26/12
HerWorld

Sheridan High School business students participated in HerWorld on Thursday, December 8th, 2011, at the Denver Merchandise Mart.  HerWorld is a full day event developed by DeVry University to introduce high school junior and senior women to careers in business, technology and healthcare technology.  Business students had the opportunity to participate in the following exciting workshops…

WORKSHOP #1 (Electronics):  Spectrometer Workshop - Sensor to Explore Light, UV, and Infrared Rays-  In this workshop participants create their own electronic device that senses ultraviolet and infrared radiation as well as visible light.  They use a series of experimental stations to learn to explore the visible and invisible aspects of their environment, using it as a spectrometer. Then they get to take the device home so they can explore their own world in a new way.

WORKSHOP #2 (Business & Marketing):  Marketing a Fruit Smoothie- In this workshop you will team up with Jamba Juice to develop a marketing plan for a new and exciting fruity smoothie. You will get to sample a new fruit smoothie and then use your creative talents to develop a new marketing advertisement to help promote the new smoothie.

WORKSHOP #3 (Multi-Media):  Developing Software for Games, Virtual
Worlds and Smart Devices- This workshop is designed to introduce the simple algorithms that underlie programs across diverse applications such as games, business software, and smart phones. We will likely use ALICE, an open source technology from Carnegie Mellon University, that makes introductory programming quite simple and attractive, through drag and drop techniques, in a 3D/virtual world setting.

WORKSHOP #4 (Computer Science):  Cyber-Security Role Play- Participants will have fun learning that how we talk can protect or expose vital company and personal information. Roleplaying in this cyber-adventure game will help participants to understand both what is at stake and how to avoid being tricked. These valuable life skills can help with personal safety and critical thinking in the workplace.

In addition to the workshops, students had the opportunity to listen to Keynote Speaker: Hope Golden, Senior Business & Executive Program Manager, IBM.  "I was truly inspired by Hope's speech . It really touched  me deep down." -Jimena Saucedo, SHS Business Student

"The Her World field trip was a great experience! I learned about computer programming, through a program called Alice. In another workshop I learned about social engineering and Internet security. My favorite activities were the Jamba Juice marketing challenge and translating light waves into sound. Overall, this was a great field trip that was worthwhile." -Linda Medina, SHS Business Student

"Cyber Security- in this station we learned how to be secure when giving out information. Spectrometer- In this station we learned how to make a circuit. Smoothie- In this station we made an advertising poster. Overall it was very fun." -Nere Ayala, SHS Business Student

"The most important thing I learned is how to create a 3D movie, how to tie sound and light together, and how to market an idea for a business." -Sheri
Bledsoe, SHS Business Student
